Wait…Canadians have Thanksgiving too?

Yes. I was shocked as well. I’m sure we’ve all seen the Friends Thanksgiving episode with Brad Pitt. It’s iconic. TV shows and films are constantly reminding us of the American holiday Thanksgiving, that is always somewhere in November and somehow more epic than Christmas.

However, not one show I have seen mentions Canadian Thanksgiving. It’s an even bigger deal here and it is celebrated in a completely different month – October.

This year Thanksgiving was celebrated on the 8th October and I was lucky enough to join a Canadian family for their traditional Thanksgiving festivities. The dinner we had was a traditional roast with a few additions and alterations. Instead of roast potatoes, there were mashed potatoes and also a vegetable I had not tried before – butternut squash. The name didn’t seem too appealing, but the taste resembled a very creamy mashed potato!

After having the inevitable feeling of fullness which makes you wished you were like Joey and brought along your “Thanksgiving pants” (I can finally use that reference!), it was soon time to relax.

Copious amounts of wine and being surrounded by multiple relatives makes you understand why Americans AND Canadians cherish this holiday. It’s a great time for everyone to come together, even if it is just for a few hours or a whole weekend.

But let’s not forget about the main event – DESSERT. To answer everyone’s questions, YES it is like the movies, there’s numerous dishes that everyone brings along and you wonder how you can possible try everything. From pumpkin pie to lemon mousse, it’s fair to say I had an excellent time.

It was also my first time trying pumpkin pie and it did not disappoint. The soft and cinnamon goodness smelled and tasted like a festive holiday in every bite. No wonder everyone loves it, especially as its mandatory to cover your pie with whipped cream. What’s not to love?
