Birmingham to Ottawa. It didn’t sound daunting five months ago when I found out I would be studying abroad at Carleton University for one semester, but as the days got closer and closer, it suddenly felt more real.
Don’t get me wrong, studying abroad is an exciting prospect, that’s one of the reasons I applied. But as August loomed it suddenly hit me how my life is going to change. Moving to Liverpool in 2017 for University was already a huge step, but moving to a new country was a giant leap.
Writing this after being at Carleton for almost two weeks made me realise how I am proud that I took the leap and not only applied, but also went through with my decision. Ottawa has continued to surprise me with the gorgeous summer weather, Instagram-worthy sites and friendly atmosphere.
Moving to a new country makes you discover a new level of independence. From flying alone for the first time, making my own travel plans and discovering a whole new city, all made me realise how far I had come (not just in distance!). It’s quite impressive how in the space of a few days I became completely self-sufficient, as it’s when you’re left completely alone that you can discover just how much you’re really capable of.
The first few days when you arrive ultimately feel like you’re just on vacation. The days consist of taking in all the breath-taking sites and exploring a new city with your camera glued to your hand ready to capture every moment. However, as I moved into my accommodation on campus, the days started to become more surreal, as I realised that this city is soon going to become my home for the next few months. Buying bedding at Walmart surely puts things into perspective!
Although during the first week I went through numerous emotions, many consisting of “what have I done? How could I move to a new country??” But after a while, you realise it’s pretty amazing. I’m 19 and ready to make these unique memories and I’m proud I’ve taken a chance and left my safe environment at home and University.
I can’t guarantee that all moments here will be an epic story that I’ll repeatedly mention every time I get back home (hey, we all know someone like that, right?), but there will inevitably be moments of homesickness. As I am sure that that is all part of the process of being away from your safe place and stepping out of your comfort zone.
Lastly, I hope you stay to follow me on this journey, as I discover new places in Ottawa and on my travels, make new friends and honestly just be amazed at all the food Canada has and Britain doesn’t! (Cinnamon Bun Oreos, anyone??)
Thanks for reading!
