Twenty-four hours in New York

Categories Student, TravelPosted on

I was lucky enough to spend four days of my fall break in New York, which were extremely busy and fun-packed days that all had numerous unique moments. I’m going to take you through one of my days on this trip, from morning strolls in Central Park, right to my evening trance staring at the Brooklyn Bridge at night. But be prepared for a lot of tv show references!

Fortunately, the weather in New York was what you can define as ‘jacket weather.’ This made for a great time to visit Central Park which was just down the street from where I was staying. The early morning sunlight and crisp weather made for some stunning photos and moments, but the numerous paths, make you wonder if this park ever ends! However, it did suddenly dawn on me that this is not just some park, but CENTRAL PARK. The park where Blair and Chuck got married and the inspiration behind Central Perk. Now to stop fangirling, a morning stroll was not complete without a morning coffee, so to Starbucks we go!

Eventually ending on the Upper East side (I just love saying this), I found a Starbucks and was ready to recite my order like a proper New Yorker (although I was a little rusty from only drinking Tim Hortons French Vanilla in Ottawa). With my latte in hand, I was ready to find the Met steps and shop like a fellow Upper East Sider in Bloomingdales. The Department store was mesmerising, but did remind me of a House of Fraser set up, with numerous high end brands. Naturally the next stop after Bloomingdales was to find Macy’s (don’t judge me…I only get to exercise my gossip girl spending habits once…).

Now for an unusual tourist destination, my friend and I decided to visit the Friends Apartment Building. Yep, its real guys. We too can pretend to not have our lives together, whilst living in one of the best cities in the world. Well not really…we can just stand outside it and imagine we do? But you can tell this was a popular activity, as there were multiple other families there, all looking at this building on a quiet road in Greenwich village.

I told you this was a fun packed day, but also a very busy day with our next stops being a quick visit to the Highline and Top of the Rockefeller Centre. The Highline is a converted railway that the public are able to walk across and of course take some stunning pictures of the New York views. And if like me this is your goal, visiting the Top of the Rock is a definite must as well! Luckily visiting at 5pm was the perfect time to get views of New York from light to dark and seeing the whole of New York lit up.

After multiple photos were taken it was time to get a subway to Brooklyn Bridge and be prepared to walk across something that I have seen numerous times as a picture in my lounge at home. The tiring walk is forgotten as soon as you see the views on the bridge and realise just how iconic this bridge really is. Looking at the bridge in the dark all lit up, after a delicious dinner at Shake Shack, the bridge was truly mesmerising. It looked exactly like the picture at home and in all the tv shows and films it has been used in. The moments I had when looking at the bridge reflected my whole trip in New York and how no other city can amaze you as much as this. It’s weird to know that everything you see on tv and films screens your whole life (at least mine anyway) is actually real. New York definitely makes you feel like you’re living in your own film.
